Swiss Indoors Basel 2024 delivered top-class tennis in the quarter-finals. American shooting star Ben Shelton (ATP 23) prevailed in a tense battle against the experienced Andrey Rublev (ATP 7). Shelton won 7:5, 6:7, 6:7 in a fiercely contested match that kept spectators glued to their seats. Both players exhibited exceptional tennis, with powerful ground strokes and strong serves. Shelton was particularly impressive with 13 aces and his determination to keep the upper hand in the decisive moments.
Young Dane Holger Rune (ATP 14) also confirmed his excellent form, defeating Belgian David Goffin (ATP 54) 6:2, 6:4.. Rune controlled the game from the start, leaving Goffin little chance of getting into the match. With his aggressive playing style and strong backhand strokes, Rune secured a confident entry into the semi-finals.
Another surprise came from up-and-coming French star Arthur Fils (ATP 20), who beat favourite Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 11) in straight sets 7:6, 6:3. Fils showed nerves of steel as he held the upper hand in the first set tiebreak and dominated the second set with his powerful playing style. Fils was one of the youngest players to reach the semi-finals.
Another French talent, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (ATP 50), beat Denis Shapovalov (ATP 95) 6:7, 6:3, 7:6 in the quarter-finals and will go on to face Holger Rune in the semi-finals. Perricard showed strength and consistency and will try to continue his impressive run in the tournament.
Swiss Indoors Basel is known for supporting NextGen stars, and this year’s tournament once again underlines why young talent is the focus. Only players under the age of 22 will feature in the semi-finals – a sign of the strength of the younger generation. With Ben Shelton as the oldest semi-finalist at just 22 years of age, the semi-finals promise exciting duels and more spectacular matches. Ben Shelton will face Arthur Fils, while Holger Rune will go up againstGiovanni Mpetshi Perricard for a place in the final.
