ATP tour 500 – EUR 2.540 million – 19 to 27 October 2024
The quarterfinal stage at this year’s Swiss Indoors Basel is set to be thrilling, with most of the favourites still in contention. Andrey Rublev, Ben Shelton, Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas showed their class and secured their places in the quarters, while enthusiastic Swiss fans created an incredible atmosphere in St. Jakobshalle when local heroes Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Stricker took to the court.
Ben Shelton (ATP 23) defeated Stan Wawrinka 7–6, 7–5 in a spectacular match. He impressed with his strong serve, hit nine aces and won the decisive tiebreak in the first set. Wawrinka fought for every point, but could not take advantage of the breaks and bid farewell to his home fans to great applause.
The young Dane Holger Rune (ATP 14) won 6–3, 7–6 in an equally intense match against the Swiss Dominic Stricker (ATP 258). Stricker showed strong resistance, especially in the second set, where he forced Rune into a tiebreak. But Rune again proved his nerve, securing his place in the quarterfinals.
Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 11) also prevailed 7–6, 7–5 in a close match against Botic van de Zandschulp (ATP 68). The Greek showed his quality in the decisive moments and remains one of the favourites for the tournament.
Meanwhile, Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (ATP 50) caused an upset by unexpectedly defeating two-time defending champion Félix Auger-Aliassime. He will now put his strong form to the test against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov (ATP 95) in the quarters.
Now we’re looking forward to the upcoming top-class quarterfinals, where Andrey Rublev will meet the in-form Holger Rune, with the players’ styles making for an exciting duel. We also have the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and the up-and-coming Arthur Fils, who has also played impressively.
With these exciting matches, the quarterfinal at Swiss Indoors Basel promises top-level tennis, with both favourites and up-and-coming players battling it out to make it to the semis.
