ATP tour 500 – EUR 2.540 million – 19 to 27 October 2024
This year, Swiss Indoors Basel is once again providing an arena for emerging talent to prove their mettle. Three of the most promising next-gen players prevailed in their first-round matches today, underscoring why the tournament has been backing young, up-and-coming stars for years.
Swiss crowd favourite Dominic Stricker (ATP 258) delivered an impressive performance as he confidently defeated favourite Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 35) in straight sets, triumphing 6–4, 6–4. Stricker shone with 14 aces and a strong first-serve percentage, securing a well-deserved place in the second round.
Danish rising star Holger Rune (ATP 14) also gave a strong showing against Chilean Nicolás Jarry (ATP 34). Rune finally prevailed 7–6, 6–3 after a fiercely contested match in which he managed to hold his nerve in the tiebreak of the first set.
Equally impressive was the victory of American Ben Shelton (ATP 23), who knocked Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry (ATP 36) out of the tournament after winning 6–3, 6–4. Shelton dominated the match with his powerful serves and confidently secured his place in the second round.
In addition to the next-gen stars, one of the tournament’s top favourites, Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 11), also made his mark. The Greek, who is the tournament’s third seed, progressed to the second round after a thrilling match.
Tomorrow, fans can look forward to something very special indeed: local hero Stan Wawrinka (ATP 169) will play his opening match against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (ATP 57). The atmosphere is sure to be electric when the three-time Grand Slam champion steps onto the court at St. Jakobshalle.
