ATP Tour 500 – EUR 2.196 million – 21 to 29 October 2023
Carlos Alcaraz has to pay tribute to his exhausting season. Apparently, the three months of tournaments on hard courts in America and Asia have taken their toll on the Spaniard. Alcaraz had to cancel his start at the Swiss Indoors (October 21-29) today, Wednesday, due to an injury. According to his doctor's bulletin, the world number two is suffering from inflammation of the sole of his left foot and problems in his gluteal muscles.
Stan Wawrinka from Vaud is now in the main draw due to a move up in the entry list. The wildcard that has become available as a result will be awarded to Leandro Riedi from Switzerland. He is the third member of the Swiss Davis Cup core team alongside Wawrinka/Stricker and is one of the great Swiss hopes.
Tournament president Roger Brennwald learned of manager Albert Molina's cancellation at noon today with great regret and stated: "Such news, as we also know from previous years, naturally hits us hard. But cancellations due to injury are beyond our control. Fortunately, this year's tournament has an outstanding number of players. An exciting clash with 15 players from the world's top 30 is nevertheless guaranteed."
The draw for the main tournament will take place next Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Swiss Indoors Media Center. Following this, the program of matches for the opening day Monday, October 23, 2023, will be determined and published.
In the qualification, which starts on Saturday, the two Swiss Marc-Andrea Hüsler and Mika Brunold will enjoy a wildcard. The 19-year-old local matador Mika Brunold thus celebrates his debut on the international stage as another Swiss hopeful.
