This evening, Stan Wawrinka (ATP 17) will go up against #NextGenATP participant Frances Tiafoe (ATP 48) at 7 pm.
This will be the first time that Stan the Man (ATP 17) will play against the 21-year-old US player Frances Tiafoe (ATP 48). After a successful run at the European Open in Antwerp, where he reached the final, Wawrinka is ready and raring to go in Basel. In the first round, the three-time Grand Slam champion gave a convincing performance against the Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas (ATP 45) and required just two sets to win 6-3, 6-4.
But the young American Frances Tiafoe should not be dismissed lightly. At the Australian Open, Tiafoe reached the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of his still-young tennis career, making him the youngest US quarterfinalist in a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2003. His biggest success to date was his win against the South African Kevin Anderson (ATP 21), who was seeded sixth, in the second round of this year’s Australian Open. Tiafoe has also already qualified for the #NextGenATP.
Wawrinka, of course, is looking to secure a place in the quarterfinals here in Basel for the fifth time. It is sure to be a thrilling encounter, promising yet another memorable match at Swiss Indoors Basel. The winner will play Roger Federer tomorrow.
