The Italian Fabio Fognini (ATP 12) is taking part in the Swiss Indoors in Basel for the first time. Keep an eye out for the temperamental Italian.
Things are never dull when Fabio Fognini is on court. Thanks to his exuberant Italian spirit, his amiable yet occasionally impatient and tempestuous style never fails to keep spectators’ attention. But he’s no tennis bad boy. After the match, he’s all smiles.
The Italian number two has also impressed with excellent results this year. In April, he won the ATP Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo against the Serb Dusan Lajovic (ATP 33). And here also in his first appearance in Basel, he will meet a Serb in the next round. The 27-year-old Filip Krajinovic (ATP 46) defeated his countryman Laslo Djere (ATP 39) earlier today. Surely a good omen!
The talented Fognini is delighted to be playing in Basel this year. Although he splits his time between Italy, Barcelona and Miami, he occasionally visits Switzerland as well – at his parents’ holiday home in Valais. For Fognini, tennis is a family affair: his wife Flavia Pennetta was also a professional tennis player and won the US Open in 2015.
Last but not least, he still has the chance to qualify for the ATP Finals in London. So keep an eye on 'Fogna’!
He will be playing tomorrow night on Center Court after Stan Wawrinka’s match. So once again we’re looking forward to tennis of the highest calibre in St. Jakobshalle tomorrow.
