The Swiss Indoors Basel has an autumn of hot sporting action to look forward to. Two titans from two different generations of the world’s elite will be lining up for the highlight of the Swiss tennis calendar from 19 to 27 October – nine-time winner Roger Federer and the latest ATP Finals winner Alexander Zverev. Both players are currently in the world’s top four, Germany’s Zverev ranked third and Switzerland's Federer fourth.
Federer always puts a great deal of energy into his pursuit of success at the Swiss Indoors. The once-in-a-generation player has scooped nine titles in the St. Jakobshalle so far, with a tenth well within the 37-year-old’s grasp if he is on form. For the first time in a number of years, Federer will play his opening match on Super Monday – 21 October. As is tradition, the grand opening will be crowned with a show, with details of the opening ceremony to be announced before the French Open.
Forced to pull out of last year’s tournament at the last minute with a back injury, Stan Wawrinka (ATP 37) is returning to Basel this year. He has celebrated a magnificent comeback on the ATP Tour after two successful knee operations. Having occupied the lowly ranking of ATP number 263 as recently as June 2018, the man from Vaud is close to breaking into the top 20 once again. At the indoor tournament in Rotterdam earlier this spring, he proved his class by making it all the way to the finals. Things are looking up for the three-time Grand Slam winner: for instance, he only has to secure ten ranking points at the French Open in Paris to match his performance last year.
Wawrinka, in the hunt for his long-sought-after maiden Swiss Indoors title, will enter the fray on Tuesday 22 October.
Germany’s new tennis hero Alexander Zverev has fond memories of his time in Basel last year. Despite exiting at the semi-final stage, he bounced back in some style at the ATP Finals in London – on the same surface as in Basel’s St. Jakobshalle – winning his first-ever end-of-season title in majestic fashion. All-rounder Zverev is a class act with all the makings of a future world number one.
